Alisha Oakley, a 23-year-old woman, was released from court after a judge ruled she was suffering from a psychotic episode when she stabbed Reece Tyler in the back of the head. The incident occurred at a party in October 2018, where Oakley, Tyler, and friends were drinking vodka. Oakley tried to kiss Tyler, but when he rejected her and went to sleep with another woman, Oakley stabbed him in the back of the head.
Tyler was rushed to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, and treated with surgical glue for a scalp wound. The knife missed his brain by just 2 centimeters.
The Canterbury Crown Court sentenced Oakley to two years in jail, suspended for 18 months, after she pleaded guilty to wounding with intent. Additionally, she must undergo six months of drug rehabilitation. There was no compensation for Tyler as Oakley could not pay, though she faces a £140 surcharge bill.
Tyler expressed disappointment with the court’s leniency, saying, “I worry if I reject another girl, I could be stabbed. I’m lucky to be alive. The assault could have left me with brain damage or worse. I have lost my faith in people.”
The court considered psychiatric evidence showing that Oakley had been diagnosed with emotional instability disorder and was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the attack. Her lawyer, Anna Chestnut, noted that Oakley had not reoffended since the incident and is now on antipsychotic medication.
Chestnut highlighted court delays, Oakley’s clean criminal record before the attack, her mental health issues, and a supportive family network as mitigating factors. She urged the judge to depart from standard sentencing guidelines.
Tyler, however, felt justice was not served, saying, “The trauma has caused me a lot of anxiety around women, affected my relationship with my daughter, and impacted my work. The courts have been too lenient.”
Despite these concerns, Oakley walked free on Wednesday after the court suspended her sentence.
