Harjot Kaur Bamhrah, a senior IAS officer and chairperson-cum-MD of Women and Child Development Corporation (WCDC), stirred controversy by ridiculing a schoolgirl’s modest request for affordable sanitary napkins at an event.
During a workshop titled “Sashakt Beti, Samridh Bihar: Towards enhancing the value of girls in Bihar”, organized by WCDC in collaboration with international NGOs on September 27th, a schoolgirl asked, “Can’t the government provide us with affordable sanitary napkins that cost Rs 20-30 (per pack)?”
In response, Bamhrah remarked, “Is there no end to such demands? Tomorrow you might ask for jeans, then fancy shoes, and eventually suggest the government provide condoms for family planning.”
The official’s insensitive comments drew criticism when the girl, feeling humiliated, expressed reluctance to support the government in the next elections.
Social Welfare Minister Madan Sahni expressed dismay over Bamhrah’s remarks, stating, “Instead of encouraging them, she discouraged the morale of young girls. This is unacceptable. She must refrain from such statements in public.”
Sahni emphasized the importance of addressing women’s demands and pledged to discuss the issue with the department secretary, highlighting the government’s efforts in women’s welfare, including reservations in state panchayat bodies and government jobs.
